Board of Health Bans Smoking in Parks, Playgrounds

Also public recreation facilities

The Board of Health adopted an ordinance banning smoking in Borough parks, playgrounds, public swimming facilities and recreational areas.

Signs will be put in place to advise residents of the ban at these areas. Violating the ban can lead to a $50 to $100 fine for a first violation, $100 to $200 for a second violation, and $200 to $500 for a third violation.

The Board of Health held a public hearing on the ordinance at its June 27 meeting. Health Officer John Hopper said smoking increases health risks for smokers and non-smokers.

He added that the ordinance would keep children from seeing adults smoke.

“Children are very impressionable and often attempt to emulate actions and habits of adults," Hopper said. “Whatever can be done to discourage children from the temptation of experimenting with tobacco products will be of tremendous help in preventing future disease."
