Spartans Finish 6th in County Wrestling Tournament

Paladin boys pick up first win on the court

The Paramus Spartans are again proving they are going to be a tough team to beat this season as the wrestling team placed sixth overall in the Bergen County Tournament. The Spartans had five wrestlers place within the top eight. 

Nick Spinoso (145) came in second place behind Becton/Wallington's Tyler Loughlin in an 11-3 decision after recording a techincal fall, major decision and decision in the early rounds.

Joe Trovato (120) and Matt Tozzi (195) finished in fourth after being ousted in the semifinals, Justin Cochran (132) was fifth and Laith Abwini (138) seventh.

Wrestling

The Paladins never made it past the third round in the Bergen County Tournament as Zach Cavallaro (126), Mike Scaravilli (132), William Duby (138), Justin Cotello (170), Evan Latrella (182) and Marcus Pantoka (285) ran into tough competition.

Following the County tournament, the Paladins fell to Pascack hills 51-19 as Paramus Catholic earned points fom Zach Gavallaro's (120) 3:49 pin of Michael Goldstein; Michael Scaravilli's 9-2 decision over John Kalimtzis (132); William Duby's (145)  13-2 major decision over Neel Patel and Justin Costello's (170) pin of William Trumbetti in 5:04.

Basketball

The Paramus Catholic Paladins earned their first win of the season during a Big North United Division match-up with St. Joseph (Montvale) 61-59  in a tight back and forth game  as Kareem Cooton banked 19 points followed by Kyle Menard’s 16. During the holidays, the Paladins dropped two games in the Msgr. Eugene B. Kelly Classic in Somerville after hot starts but were unable to finish. PC fell to Gill St. Bernard's 69-50 and Plainfield 55-32.

The Lady Spartans Brittany Stone is now within 92 points of her career 1000th point as she banked 31 points in the girls team losses to Passaic Tech 52-32 and Ridgewood 52-31.

The Lady Paladins, fell to Big North United rivals IHA in the Joe Poli Holiday Tournament 52-47 finals after the Eagles exploded in the final seconds to surge ahead. Previously the Paladins downed host Pascack Valley 40-20 in the semifinals.

PHS is still seeking a win after falling to Mahwah 66-49 and Ridgewood 70-50. The Spartans struggled against the T-Birds as they were outshot 2:1 even with John Morella netting 19 points. Justin Links and Matt Pechman (12 points each) were unable to keep a spark going against the Maroons.

Ice Hockey

Paramus had an unsuccessful run in the Pepsi Holiday Classic falling to Mahwah 2-0 and Wayne Valley 3-2 and then to Mahwah again in the regular season 6-1. Goalie Alex Kellenberger stopped 71 shots in three games while the offense was limited to tallies by Chris Sabo, Tom Palestina and Rich LaBarbiera.

Swimming

The Spartan boys picked up a 103-67 victory over Indian Hills as Paramus claimed the 200 medley relay (Max Gritz, Harold Choo, Eric Kim, Phil Rim), the 200 freestyle (Jon Scrivanich), 200IM (Choo), 100 fly (E. Kim), 200 free relay (Rim, Victor Kim, Ryan Stallone, Scrivanich), the 100 back (E. Kim), 100 breaststroke (Choo) and 400 relay (Choo, Scrivanich, E. Kim, Jeff Park).

Indoor Track

At the Tom Zaccone Invitational in Hackensack Lady Paladins Rosie Menyhard placed sixth in the 55m in 7.9 seconds and then finished in a three-way sixth place tie with Zahtaie Mouzone (Passaic) and Kristen Webb (Ramsey) in the 200m in 28.3 seconds.
