Teen Cancer Survivor Relays To "Pay It Forward"

Whiz Kid will co-chair weekend Relay for Life at Paramus Catholic

Mahwah resident Tim Malone, a 17-year-old junior at Paramus Catholic High School, and his family have a good reason to be excited for this weekend’s Relay for Life fundraiser at his school.

“On January 7, 2010 I received the news that I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma Stage 3B. I left school for treatment, and had the arduous task of completing my sophomore year of high school at home,” Tim explains on his Relay page.

“Thank God, I have beaten the disease and am now once again a full time Junior!”

Tim and his entire family have taken his recovery as a sign that they should give back to the community by forming the Relay ‘Team Tim’ and raising money for this weekend’s event.

“He is a survivor, and going through everything we went through was really an eye opener for us,” his mom, Maryann, said.

“Team Tim is our way of giving back. We feel a need to pay it forward.”

Thus far, Tim, who attended Mahwah schools from Kindergarten through eighth grade, has individually raised about $3,500 of his $5,000 goal. The entire Team Tim – which includes his family members and friends – has beaten its $8,000 goal, raising over $8,400 so far.

“When I was asked to participate as the co-chair for Paramus Catholic's First Annual Relay For Life, I knew this was my chance to spread the word about teen cancer,” Tim says on his Relay page.

“I want to let everyone know that cancer is no longer a death sentence. I am living proof of this!”

This school event is not open to the public, but the Malone family members say they are extremely grateful for all of the donations from the Mahwah community.
