Sullivan, Weber Win Council Seats Vacated by Republicans

Jeanne T. Weber and Stephen J. Sullivan, both Republicans, prevented the possibility of a Democrat dominated Mayor and Council.

Jeanne T. Weber and Stephen J. Sullivan, both new faces to the Paramus Council, won their seats over Michael DeLamater and Carol Daniele on Tuesday.

There were no incumbents running for re-election this year. Republican council members Ralph Amato and Eric Nazziola won election in 2010 but were not seeking re-election in 2013.

This put the Borough of Paramus in a situation where the Mayor and Council could have been completely Democratic.

“We ran on the fact that you don’t want the council to be 7-0 for Democrats or Republicans,” said Sullivan. “I think people realized that you really do need checks and balances.”

The departing members of the council were both Republican. The victories for Sullivan and Weber ensure that the council will not become entirely dominated by one party.

“It’s important to have people from both sides on the Council. You get different opinions and ideas,” added Sullivan.

Sullivan and Weber have both spoken out about maintaining the Blue Laws in Paramus and keeping property taxes in check.

“That’s what we brought to people. We ran keeping the board balanced and the Blue Laws,” said Sullivan. “We support the Blue Laws and trying to get the best services we can for the borough.”
