NFL Doubles Price of Best Super Bowl Seats

An NFL spokesman says demand and the "secondary market" are to blame.

The NFL is more than doubling ticket prices for premium seating at Super Bowl XLVIII.

Why?

Because they can.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy is quoted in USA Today saying the reason is scalpers and insane demand.

"We are looking to close the gap between the face value of the ticket and its true value as reflected on the secondary market," he told the paper. “The uniqueness of the Super Bowl in the New York/New Jersey is also driving unprecedented demand and buzz."

Essentially, the demand for the best seats in East Rutherford's MetLife stadium is so ravenously high that tickets which would have cost $1,250 will be sold for $2,600 because scalpers—aka the “secondary market”—would have been able to get the higher price for them.

If anyone should be making that extra cash, shouldn't it be the NFL?

The cost of a seat in the next best section will increase from $950 last year to $1,500 for the February game, according to USA Today.

What do you think? Is the price increase hurting real NFL diehards or were the prices already too steep for the average football fan?
