Paramus Plans to Bring on Quality of Life Officer

Part-time officer would have authority to issues summonses and enforce existing ordinances.

Paramus took the first steps this week towards creating the position of a part-time quality of life officer who will make sure properties are maintained and existing ordinances are met.

"We’re a big community, and there is a huge need [for this], it’s something near and dear to all of us. It's a step in right direction and we’ll see where it goes," said Mayor Richard LaBarbiera Tuesday night.

The mayor says this position would be a little different from the building and grounds maintenance officers the borough had a few years ago.

The quality of life officer would check into many after hours issues such as garbage pails being put out too early and looking into outdoor dining rules, for example.

The quality of life officer would have the authority to issue summonses and enforce ordinances that already exist, explained LaBarbiera.

He or she would also monitor property maintenance such as overgrown grass, something which can be an issue especially at this time of year, explained LaBarbiera.

The plan right now is to start with one part-time officer but if the need arises the borough would entertain additional part-time officers, said the mayor.
